Part 2: HTC TYTN2 - Installing a custom Windows Mobile OS

by Teh KillerBee 18. March 2011 21:38

Hello fellow TYTN2 owners!

As you might have guessed, this post is about installing a custom Windows Mobile ROM on the TYTN2. If you have not already read Part 1, now would be a very good time to do so Smile

It is now time to find a new custom windows mobile ROM. I usually find mine here, just remember to look for [ROM] in the thread name.

ROMs I recommend:

WinMo 6.5 - lightweight ROM ahmedfikry  light w/ 3D driver, cool icons, user customization & LOTS of useful applications ready for download in the thread (.cab files) [UPDATED: 2nd November 2010]

I have tried quite a few WinMo ROMs before, most of them are dead slow but this one is different. It is very lightweight and VERY FAST! If you have never used WinMo 6.5 on your TYTN2, this is definitely the one to try first. Remember to check the collection of ROM's!

Link to the thread where the ROM can be downloaded

EDIT: The link is dead, try this one instead.

Flashing the custom ROM:

If you have any problems, remember to check out the noobs guide mentioned earlier

There is two ways you can flash these ROMs to your HTC TYTN2:

The ActiveSync method:

  1. Make sure to REMOVE SIM and microSD CARDS FIRST
  2. Download your preferred rom from xda-developers, and unzip/unrar this folder
  3. Turn on the phone and wait until it syncs with your PC. It may be necessary to install Windows Mobile Device Center (an updated version of ActiveSync). You can download the software from Microsoft
  4. Run the KaiserCustomRUU.exe from the custom ROM you have just downloaded.
  5. The flashing process will start.
  6. When the phone is done flashing, it will reset and get to the screen where you need to configure the stylus. Perform a HARD RESET
  7. When prompted, press the green call button, "Send Button" to clear the data.
  8. When prompted, press the green call button, "Send Button" to restart the phone
  9. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the new custom ROM.
  10. When the phone is done with the customization procedure, turn it off and replace any SIM & microSD cards.
  11. Turn the phone back on, and set it up as required.

It is also possible to flash a new rom directly from the microSD card. I prefer this method, mostly because of my semi-broken USB cable.

The SD-flash method:

  1. Make sure the microSD card is fat32 formatted. It is not necessary to delete all files
  2. Download your preferred rom from xda-developers, and unzip/unrar this folder
  3. Go to the "Roms" folder inside the unpacked folderand rename the .nbh file to KAISIMG.nbh
  4. Copy this KAISIMG.nbh file to the root of the microSD card. Insert the card into the phone (duh!)
  5. Hold the power and camerabuttons, and then press the reset button with the stylus for 3 seconds until the BootLoader screen appears
  6. First the bootloader will show a tri-colour screen with phone and SPL information in the top.
  7. You will now be prompted to press the Power button to start the update. Press the power button
  8. When the phone finishes the flashing process and says "Update Complete", reset the phone with the stylus.
  9. When the phone is done flashing, it will reset and get to the screen where you need to configure the stylus. Perform a HARD RESET
  10. When prompted, press the green call button, "Send Button" to clear the data.
  11. When prompted, press the green call button, "Send Button" to restart the phone
  12. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the new custom ROM.

If everything went well, you should now be running a custom ROM on your TYTN2

PROBLEMS!?

Usually the symptoms are camera, audio, 3G etc. not working. It is pretty easy to fix, since this means that the radio firmware (the firmware for the radio part of the phone) is not compatible with your current ROM. Therefore you need to upgrade to this firmware instead. You can upgrade your radio firmware by using both the SD flash and active sync method.

If you have any other problems using my guide, please dont hesitate writing me in the comments and I will try to help the best i can!

Huge credit goes to mskip for the thread and part of this guide, & ahmedfikry for creating the lightening fast ROM

The reason why your camera or audio does not work, is because the radio firmware is not compatible with the updated ROM

It is difficult to say what version of the radio firmware you need to use, but you can try this one - i have had good experiences with it - both running windows mobile and android

Im glad you liked my guide, stay tuned for more updates! Smile

Oh by the way.. You can flash your radio by running the including upgrader but it is also possible to upgrade, if you are using the SD flash method.. Just copy the *.nbh file to your SD card and rename it KAISIMG.nbh!

It sounds like your ROM has got corrupt somehow, but hard resetting the phone usually helps

Upgrading to WinMo6.5 or android is still a really good idea - it really breathes new life in the TYTN!

Hi, I see the links have been dead after I upgraded to the latest version of blogengine. They should be fixed now, and you can find a link to the latest radio in the last part of the blogpost or here: www.josoft.net/.../...NLY_1.71.09.01_CustomRuu.zip

You can upgrade your radio firmware by using both the SD flash and active sync method.
